White wine from the Mosel

The white wine and the Mosel are firmly anchored. For our wine region as well as for our winery, white wine is a trademark and the basis of life. The Mosel is best known for its white wines, which are usually characterized by great fruit and are in demand worldwide.

White grape varieties along the Mosel

When we talk about white wine at the Mosel, the word “Riesling” comes up in the second sentence at the latest. This grape variety is probably the most typical as well as the best known for the Mosel wine-growing region. In second place is the Müller-Thurgau, which is also called Rivaner. The portfolio of white grape varieties is rounded off by Kerner, Pinot Blanc and Elbling. White wines such as Chardonnay or Pinot Gris, for which the Mosel is not yet so well known, are also becoming more popular.

White wine from our winery

It is important to us that our white wines make the special character of the Mosel palatable. Great fruit, subtle acidity and fine minerality as well as texture that reflect the terroir of our vineyards are essential to us. In addition, each white grape variety brings in its own individual character traits, which make the white wine from our winery and gernerally from the Mosel so exciting.

White Wine FAQs

How is white wine produced?
White wine is produced by gently pressing the grapes and fermenting the juice without extended contact with the skins. This process prevents the extraction of color compounds and tannins, resulting in the typical pale color and a fresh, clean style.
Which grape varieties are typical for white wine?
Key white wine grape varieties include Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, and Pinot Blanc. In the Mosel region, Riesling plays a central role and strongly defines the regional wine style.
How does white wine differ from red wine in terms of sensory profile?
White wine typically shows greater freshness, more pronounced acidity, and lower tannin levels. As a result, it is generally lighter and more fruit-driven, whereas red wine tends to be fuller-bodied and more structured.
What styles of white wine exist?
White wines are produced in a range of styles, including dry, off-dry, and sweet. These styles are primarily determined by the residual sugar content and significantly influence the overall perception of the wine.
Why is the Mosel region particularly known for white wine?
The Mosel is one of Germany’s most renowned white wine regions. Its cool climate, steep vineyards, and slate soils create ideal conditions for elegant, finely structured wines with moderate alcohol levels.
What is the ideal serving temperature for white wine?
The ideal serving temperature depends on the style of the wine. Light and fresh white wines are typically served at 8 to 10°C, while more complex wines can be enjoyed at slightly higher temperatures to reveal their full aroma.
What food pairs well with white wine?
White wine pairs particularly well with fish, poultry, and light dishes. It also complements vegetarian meals and spicy cuisine, as its freshness and aromatic profile balance a wide range of flavors.
How does origin influence white wine?
Origin has a significant impact on the character of white wine. Climate, soil, and vineyard location shape its style, aroma, and structure. Regions like the Mosel are known for producing highly distinctive, terroir-driven wines.
